For me what I see in this movie is that the producers try to make the theme about loneliness. I can see how it could be very easy to be lonely and just in your own world even if you live in a big city.

No matter how high a building where we work is, it is still just one of those walls that we use to hole ourselves into that keeps us inside our small world.

Robert DeNiro is the leading character in the movie and he is basically been filmed as he works around New York as a taxi driver.

At the beginning you’d feel like his job is the centre of the movie, but as time goes on you begin to understand that the job means more to him actually as it gives him the reason to make some of the decisions he makes in his life.

In the end, a solid production work and a masterful performance from Robert DeNiro makes this movie one of the best movies made in the 70s.

The rating that I have given this film may seem low, and I understand why. Three stars for a work of such high renown is unexpected, but it is my honest opinion.

I must firstly say that I understand why ‘Taxi Driver’ is so highly regarded. It is a brilliant character study, expertly painting a picture of a man struggling with life after war; taking the issues he sees on the streets of New York into his own hands. In 1976, when the film was released, it defied the conventional aspects of cinema at the time and helped to establish New Hollywood, an emerging genre.

I believe that my problem with the film was that I did not know the nature of the story going into it. I didn’t know much about it at all, actually - only that Robert De Niro played a taxi driver, and that there was some controversy regarding Jodie Foster’s role. Everything else was a mystery, and I suppose that I was expecting a narrative-driven film like so many others. This wasn’t really what I ended up with.

Thinking about the film in retrospect, I can see why people continually rate it so highly. I already feel that I will enjoy ‘Taxi Driver’ much more upon rewatch - but as of now, I can only rate it as I feel is right.
