Donnie Darko is an intriguing film that while heavily confusing throughout the best half of it is remarkably enjoyable. Jake Gyllenhaal is fantastic as the lead character and his development is fantastic.
While the film is confusing and the use of the internet may be necessary to explain certain events the film does not suffer because of this. The film is highly original but manages to stay just on the path, psychologically this film is smart and flexing, however the plot points do not all come together.
The film is so surreal and manipulating you just cannot take your eyes off it, the special effects were quite dated but at the same time this suited the film and its tone perfectly-perhaps that was the very idea. The main draw of the film for me however was the soundtrack that fitted perfectly and post production of this film was magnificent, even now while writing this I can hear the beats and notes that the film echoed throughout. The direction and cinematography was fantastic even if the writing let it down at points being overly ambitious, then again that fits the schizophrenic psychotic titular character perfectly! This is highly recommended viewing that I'm certain requires more than one seeing.
This movie is a masterpiece. I didn’t think I’d get captivated by a mysterious movie as much as I was with Donnie Darko, but I was wrong. This movie would leave you stunned, give your mind so much to ponder about, and offer you so much mystery to want to unravel that it would take you a very long time to get over it.
If you love to watch movies that would keep you spellbound and keep your mind active all day in trying to figure out what you have just watched, it doesn’t get better than this movie.
This movie lived up to the hype and has to be one of the best sci-fi movies ever made and probably the most mysterious I have ever watched.
