The SAG-AFTRA union, representing Hollywood’s actors, has set a Monday deadline for its 160,000 members to vote on granting their negotiators the authority to call for a strike if necessary. Negotiations between the actors union and major studios are slated to commence on Wednesday.

Over the weekend, the studios seemingly averted another work stoppage by reaching a tentative agreement with the Directors Guild of America (DGA). This agreement will take effect upon ratification by DGA members.

In their ongoing negotiations, actors are advocating for improved compensation and safeguards against unauthorized usage of their likenesses through the utilization of artificial intelligence. The current agreement is set to expire on June 30.

In a letter urging members to vote in favor of the strike authorization, SAG-AFTRA leaders highlighted the significant changes within the industry due to the proliferation of streaming television and advancements in technologies like generative AI. They emphasized the need for a contract that aligns with the new business model brought about by the digital and streaming entertainment industry.

The month-long strike led by over 11,500 members of the Writers Guild of America (WGA) has already disrupted the production of late-night shows and halted high-profile projects, including a new season of Netflix’s “Stranger Things” and a Warner Bros Discovery’s (WBD.O) HBO spinoff of “Game of Thrones.”

Should actors proceed with a strike, it would result in a more extensive shutdown, adding further pressure on studios reliant on programming for their streaming services and the upcoming fall TV broadcast schedule.

During the previous WGA strike in 2007 and 2008, a studio agreement with the DGA prompted the writers to return to the bargaining table.

WGA negotiator Chris Keyser argued on Friday that this time, such a scenario would not occur. He stated, “Any deal that restores productivity to this industry must involve the WGA, and there is no way around that.” Keyser expressed this sentiment in a video posted on YouTube.

Anatomy Of A Fall claims Palme d’Or at Cannes | Koji Yakusho wins Best Actor https://whichfilm.com/anatomy-of-a-fall-claims-palme-dor-at-cannes-koji-yakusho-wins-best-actor/ Sat, 27 May 2023 19:23:26 +0000 https://whichfilm.com/?p=10247 Anatomy Of A Fall, directed by Justine Triet, claimed the prestigious Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival’s 2023 awards ceremony held at the Grand Theatre Lumiere on May 27. This Hitchcockian mystery thriller stars Sandra Hüller as a woman accused of murder after her husband’s suspicious death. The film has already secured distribution deals with Neon for North America and Picturehouse for the UK and Ireland, solidifying its global appeal.

Triet and her team received a heartfelt standing ovation, with the director expressing that this film is her most personal work yet. She dedicated her award to “all young women directors” and “young directors” alike, as well as those currently unable to make films.

Triet becomes the third female director to receive the Palme d’Or, following Julia Ducournau for Titane in 2021 and Jane Campion, who shared the award for The Piano with Farewell My Concubine in 1993.

Sandra Hüller, who stars in Anatomy Of A Fall, also features alongside Christian Friedel in Jonathan Glazer’s Zone of Interest, which earned the runner-up Grand Prix award. Glazer’s film, based on Martin Amis’ novel of the same name, explores the surreal domestic life of an Auschwitz commandant and his wife, shedding light on the unseen horrors of the concentration camp. Glazer paid tribute to Amis during his speech, expressing gratitude for having the opportunity to show the film to the late author.

In an exciting turn of events, Tran An Hung, previously honored with the Caméra d’Or in 1993 for The Scent of Green Papaya, claimed the Best Director award for The Pot-Au-Feu. This gastronomy-themed love story features Juliette Binoche and Benoit Magimel.

The jury prize was introduced by Orlando Bloom and presented to Aki Kurismaki’s bittersweet romance Fallen Leaves, which topped Screen’s jury grid earlier in the day. This marked Kurismaki’s seventh film in Cannes, and his fifth in competition.

Yuji Sakamoto received the Best Screenplay award for Monster, directed by Japanese auteur Hirokazu Kore-eda. John C. Reilly, who presented the prize, humorously highlighted the importance of screenwriters in creating the movie experience.

Merve Dizdar from Turkey won the Best Actress award for her role in Nuri Bilge Ceylan’s About Dry Grasses, a film centered around a teacher’s mandatory assignment in a small village in Eastern Anatolia. Dizdar delivered a prepared speech in Turkish, dedicating the prize to all women who face challenges to exist in this world while holding on to hope.

The Best Actor award went to Koji Yakusho for his performance in Wim Wenders’ Perfect Days. The film follows a toilet cleaner in Tokyo as he discovers the simple beauty in his surroundings.

The Camera d’Or, which recognizes the best first features across all sections, was awarded to Thien An Pham’s Inside the Yellow Cocoon Shell, which premiered in the Directors’ Fortnight section.

This year’s jury, presided over by last year’s Palme d’Or winner Ruben Östlund, included Maryam Touzani, Denis Ménochet, Rungano Nyoni, Brie Larson, Paul Dano, Atiq Rahimi, Damián Szifron, and Julia Ducournau.

Collide (2022) Film Review – Lacks Originality https://whichfilm.com/collide-2022-film-review-lacks-originality/ Mon, 15 Aug 2022 12:00:45 +0000 https://whichfilm.com/?p=7994 You can argue that Collide has the cast in Ryan Phillippe and Kat Graham. It also has the location, a nice restaurant, dimly lit yet with a slightly tense atmosphere. But that is where it ends.

Collide lacks any originality. You have a few characters working and are under pressure for what you can describe as extra-curricular reasons. Another are on a blind date, and another are having an affair.

This is supposed to be a film where a number of characters collide as individuals but there is no real link up between them, apart from the fact they chose this restaurant instead of McDonalds.

Fast forward an hour of chatting about the Apartheid and it appears one person has planted a bomb, one is about to try a drug deal which would mean retirement, and we discover one of the staff has been on the take.

Of course, the drug deal goes awry, when don’t they in film? The bomb goes off, the one having the affair has second thoughts about the affair, all because of an explosion, and obviously the bomb goes off killing most of the drug dealers.

It’s not a film that will stop you going out for food as it’s so unrealistic it’s quite funny, if it hadn’t bored me from start to finish.

Whilst there is a little back story it’s not worthy of being watched again and if this was 1995 it would have gone straight to television for free.

Football Based Films That Should Be Made https://whichfilm.com/football-based-films-that-should-be-made/ Mon, 15 Aug 2022 10:41:45 +0000 https://whichfilm.com/?p=7965 Football gets its fair share of excitement but we rarely see football films based on what happens in real life. Sure we see the best goals of the World Cup, and title winning season films but how about digging a bit deeper? Here we give a list of football films that should most definitely be made.

A Welsh Shining (Horror, Thriller)

A woman with a mysterious little Welshman arrive at a hotel where things appear to be normal, until a brief look at the Welshman’s phone unlocks a series of horrors, and a truth the woman did not see coming.

Eight Lives Left (Documentary)

A cat based in East London gives a detailed account of life living with a footballer, culminating in 20 seconds of unforgettable recorded footage that led the cat to fame, and the footballer to a wage cut.

The Snitch (Drama)

A footballers wife starts her own investigation after private social media posts are leaked to the gutter press, and discovers the culprit is suing her for libel.

What Have I Done This Summer? (Horror)

A Dutchman who is promised magic and riches, goes through a mysterious departures door at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam and arrives in Manchester about 95 minutes later only to discover there is no magic, just total horror.

Money For Nothing (Comedy, Drama)

A young man with no footballing skills cons his way through the English league’s and international captaincy as a centre-back whilst getting paid to do nothing. (This is the prequel to ‘Greece – The Musical’)

I Don’t Love You That Much (Drama)

A dwarf from Argentina who has played at one club most of his life is given a choice. Stay here if you love us, for less money, or pretend you have no choice and head to Paris for more money.

Look Me In The Eye (Thriller)

A handshake between a German and an Italian leads to a London turf war.

It Wasn’t Me 8 (Crime, Drama)

The eighth installment of It Wasn’t Me once again stars a left-back from France currently in Manchester, UK. Sources suggest there may be another four of these films.

Not Long Now (Documentary)

Based on the prolonged transfer of Wesley Sneijder to Manchester United, still ongoing after twelve years. Footage includes the player arriving at Manchester Airport no less than fifteen times, plus comments from fans who still hold belief he will join soon. (Rumours suggest Not Long Now II is in production featuring Frenkie De Jong).

Into The Deep Isn’t Bad At All https://whichfilm.com/into-the-deep-isnt-bad-at-all/ Wed, 10 Aug 2022 13:02:57 +0000 https://whichfilm.com/?p=7786 Sky’s latest thriller might not be on the tip of anyone’s tongues when it comes to next years Oscars but it is attracting an audience.

The thriller, which is predominantly filmed on a yacht ‘belonging’ to a mysterious and attractive young man has had its fair share of watchers.

Perhaps it is the scenes of nudity, or maybe it’s the scenic views of the South Coast of Cornwall, it could well be a collection of the two and the attraction a good “danger at sea” film brings.

The film starts off very basic, and one would question the young lady going off with someone for a drink after seeing them briefly only twice, yet it quickly leads to his yacht being out at sea without her knowledge, claiming he wanted her to have breakfast on the open sea rather than the safety of the jetty where it is moored.

Things appear to be going well for the young couple when another young lady appears out of nowhere on a jet-ski, a jet-ski by the way that appears to be able to travel 200 nautical miles.

With a new guest onboard Into The Deep starts to take shape as we get towards a frightening ending. We won’t spoil anything but will say Into The Deep may prove to be more popular over time than it is now.

Black Bird Series Should Top Your Watchlist https://whichfilm.com/black-bird-series-should-top-your-watchlist/ Wed, 10 Aug 2022 12:40:07 +0000 https://whichfilm.com/?p=7783 If you haven’t heard of Black Bird then great, you’ve come to the right place. This mini-series by Apple TV, based on the biographical novel ‘Devil: a Fallen Hero, a Serial Killer, and a Dangerous Bargain for Redemption’ by James Keene and Hillel Levin, and developed for TV by Dennis Lehane, really should make your watchlist.

The story follows James Keene, who was a decent young footballer in the USA but turns to crime. He is arrested and given ten years for drugs and weapon related crimes.

Watch on Apple TV

The sentence is short lived however as he bargains a deal with the authorities to commute or reduce his sentence in exchange for getting a confession from one of the prisons most dangerous inmates, a serial killer.

The series’ Six episodes are gripping as they are addictive as we get to see how ‘Jimmy’ Keene tries to get the confession as methodically as possible, and with prison being what is it, dodging other obstacles and of course FBI politics.

Tom Cruise’s Top Gun: Maverick Closing In On Marvel Hit https://whichfilm.com/tom-cruises-top-gun-maverick-closing-in-on-marvel-hit/ Mon, 08 Aug 2022 11:58:03 +0000 https://whichfilm.com/?p=7646 Top Gun: Maverick has surpassed expectations and gone above the likes of Titanic at the box office over the weekend, having amassed $662m domestically, $3m more than Leonardo Di Caprio’s ship outing.

Top Gun: Maverick has also taken in $690m internationally which makes it Paramount’s highest grossing film in their existence spanning over 110 years.

What’s very interesting is that it is closing in on Marvel’s box office smash Avengers: Infinity War which stands at $678m domestically so still some $16m away. It’s still some distance from the top five too with Star Wars: The Force Awakens still way in front at number one with $936m.

The data is somewhat skewered though, with numbers not adjusted for inflation. It’s unknown how much longer the Tom Cruise hit will remain on the big screen for it to sneak into the top five, with $7m only being added on this weekend in theaters.

Better Call Saul Spin-Off Prequel Could Feature Lalo Salamanca and Don Eladio https://whichfilm.com/better-call-saul-spin-off-prequel-could-feature-lalo-salamanca-and-don-eladio/ Mon, 08 Aug 2022 11:31:13 +0000 https://whichfilm.com/?p=7642 Better Call Saul has been considered as superior to its predecessor in Breaking Bad and for good reason. The ratings and reviews of the Saul Goodman based spin-off has been meteoric to say the least.

Rumours though were rife at the weekend with a source close to Sony Pictures Television claiming another prequel could be on the cards, this time focusing on full time bad guy with a twist of humor, Lalo Salamanca.

It’s felt Lalo’s appearances in Better Call Saul, played by actor Tony Dalton, were short lived, with a lot more to be learned about the Salamanca who takes over the reigns from Uncle Hector and cousin Tuco.

His escapades of the past as he makes his way up the Juarez Cartel ladder are something the writers could have fun with, especially, and ultimately leading up to his appearance alongside Nacho Varga.

His dark twists of humour would also fit the narrative of Better Call Saul which Bob Odenkirk described as “85% drama and 15% comedy”.

The spin-off would include more of the scary Don Eladio, whom we see very little of, who perhaps could be shown as working for his living rather than controlling things from the comfort of his pool.

A stumbling block would be whether series creators Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould can see it as a viable series moving forward and how far back they could go with Lalo. The actors age could be deemed an issue however it worked well enough with Giancarlo Esposito as Gustavo Frings.

Either way, fans of both shows will certainly be hoping there will be ore to come.

Stranger Things “Spin-Off” Might Not Be Based In US https://whichfilm.com/stranger-things-spin-off-might-not-be-based-in-us/ Mon, 08 Aug 2022 10:40:23 +0000 https://whichfilm.com/?p=7639 Stranger Things co-creator Ross Duffer confirmed in July that the spin-off would not focus on any of the current cast in the main series, and that it is already in development.

A source close to WhichFilm.com did however confirm that the Stranger Things spin-off may not be based in the US with the possibility of the new series being based in the United Kingdom or even Australia.

The first four series of Stranger Things were based in the small town of Hawkins, Indiana and it was suggested a change of country would keep things fresh.

Although it will not be based on any of the main characters there will be openings for a potential cameo by one or even three of the now famous and loved cast.

Apparently Scotland was considered but it was felt the dialect might be too strong for global audiences although locations in the beautiful North are far from written off.

The original Stranger Things story is still far from finished with a fifth and final series renewed back in February 2022.

Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man Is Dead: Get Used To It https://whichfilm.com/robert-downey-jr-s-iron-man-is-dead-get-used-to-it/ Fri, 05 Aug 2022 11:59:52 +0000 https://whichfilm.com/?p=7510 Ever since Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man dies in Avengers: Endgame there have been theories upon theories on how he might return to the MCU in his previous form.

Doctor Strange and this Multiverses have created certain opportunities and with Iron Heart looking to make an appearance in Wakanda Forever it won’t be long before we see a “version” of Iron Man, but you won’t see Robert getting the suit on any time soon, especially at his age. One could argue, given his age, he could return in a red and silver wheelchair in one Universe (Iron Chair? Iron Wheel?) but those chances are very slim. Digital artists amongst you please send us some of your work on this – we’d love to stick it up!

If the MCU goes down the same route as the current comics then we could very well see a version of Iron Man appear but fighting for the wrong side as part of Kangs army in Avengers: Secret Wars set for release in 2025 although he would be called Iron Hammer – not because he is shaped liked a hammer but because he can wield Thors hammer Mjolnir.

Robert Downey Jr. has already confirmed he will not be returning as Iron Man, having enjoyed playing the super hero and Tony Stark since 2008. For many fans, his death does keep the MCU fresh. There might be a few cameos here and there, or digital recreations where he is younger, but as far as his wit flying through the skies is concerned, we need to get used to a universe without RDJ.

Lady Gaga May Play Version of Harley Quinn https://whichfilm.com/lady-gaga-may-play-version-of-harley-quinn/ Fri, 05 Aug 2022 09:01:04 +0000 https://whichfilm.com/?p=7468 The much anticipated ‘Joker 2’ is expected to drop onto our cinema screens October 4th 2024. Exactly five years after the first film was released. With the teaser soundtrack by a band rendition of the pop standard ‘Cheek to Cheek’, it suggests that there could be a hint of a musical to this second Joker film.

Lady Gaga has confirmed that she will co star along side Joaquin Phoenix, who will reprise his role as the Joker, and whilst Gaga has not revealed the character she’ll be playing in the up coming sequel, it is rumoured that she will star as a version of Harley Quinn in the Joker’s universe, a prison psychiatrist who, after treating the Joker, joins him in chaotic crime sprees.

The full title ‘Joker: Folie a Deux’ is a French phrase, referring to mental disorder that impacts two or more people. Hence the introduction of Lady Gaga to the Todd Phillips directed sequel.

News of the release date has come direct from Comscore and is said to have softened the blow relating to the much anticipated Batgirl, staring Leslie Grace, which has reportedly been pulled despite being in post production.

MGM Make U-Turn on Road House remake https://whichfilm.com/mgm-make-u-turn-on-road-house-remake/ Wed, 03 Aug 2022 13:57:56 +0000 https://whichfilm.com/?p=7364 MGM have made a U-turn on the planned remake of Patrick Swayze’s hard as nails bouncer movie by going back to a male for the lead role.

It was originally decided back in 2015 that Ronda Rousey would take the lead role in a gender swap of the 1989 classic however it has since been changed to feature Jake Gyllenhaal and will have Doug Liman as director.

This will be the first film on which they have worked together, although Liman has worked with the likes of Tom Holland, Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, Matt Damon and Tom Cruise in the past on films such as American Made and Chaos Walking.

Road House with Swayze was based on expert bouncer James Dalton who moves from New York City to a bar called Double Deuce in Missouri which is renowned for its trouble. He quickly makes changes for the better but trouble remains with one wealthy individual.

Batgirl Becomes GoneGirl or does it? https://whichfilm.com/batgirl-becomes-gonegirl-or-does-it/ Wed, 03 Aug 2022 13:39:39 +0000 https://whichfilm.com/?p=7361 News has been circulating that DC’s Batgirl has been put on the shelves, despite spending over $100m to make. The reason being that it got a load of poor reviews at screening.

Looking at those who star in the film it appears it looks like the decision to shelve it might have been a bit early. Leslie Grace as Batgirl, J.K. Simmons as Commissioner Jim Gordon, Michael Keaton as Batman and Brendan Fraser as bad guy villain Firefly.

‘An ensemble of great actors does not a great movie make’ could be a useful future phrase that I have just made up, but you have to look into screenings a bit closer before making a final decision.

Who was at the screenings? Fans of Cristian Bale, Children that are simply fans of Ironman? What was on the feedback forms? Without knowing the extent to which the screeners were screened in the first place means we can’t tell why.

This could of course be a huge PR stunt. The news that a film gets shelved, and its respective costs, garners higher interaction and views than a standard release date and you can bet your last pennies that there is already a new group on Reddit or Twitter asking for the “Batgirl Cut” to be released!

Take the news with a pinch of salt. It’s likely we may see Batgirl on our screens within the next year or two.

Netflix’s “Blonde” has NC-17 rating https://whichfilm.com/netflixs-blonde-has-nc-17-rating/ Mon, 01 Aug 2022 12:05:08 +0000 https://whichfilm.com/?p=7295 Netflix Original have finally released Blonde, a look at the life of Marilyn Monroe based on the novel by Joyce Carol Oates which makes it very much a fiction rather than a biography.

Originally filmed in 2019, Netflix felt it was a little extreme for their wider audiences so it was delayed a few times before they finally succomed to the version, written and directed by Andrew Dominik.

Oates’ novel does contain graphic scenes which for one reason or another, was decided to be included in the film, has meant a NC-17 rating, described on the MPA as “some sexual content”. For you and I, this means anyone 17 years and under are not permitted to watch.

How that rating is enforced at home will be up to the parents howver the fact that Netflix gave in to the rating rather than re-edit suggests they have bigger films ahead requiring more attention.

The 94 year old in question is Rocky series producer Irwin Winkler who has decided to cut the Rocky creator out of any new series meaning no royalties for any future films or series in the franchise.

This includes the new series about Ivan and Viktor Drago, stars and opponents in Creed 2.

Stallone took to Instagram to vent his frustration: “ONCE AGAIN , PATHETIC 94 year old PRODUCER and HIS SELFISH USELESS CHILDREN are once again picking what is left OFF THE BONES of another wonderful character!!!,”

Despite Stallone having created and written the character Rocky Balboa. an agreement suggests he doesn’t own the rights to the franchise.

WhichFilm Seeking Film Reviewers https://whichfilm.com/whichfilm-seeking-film-reviewers/ Sat, 30 Jul 2022 12:14:04 +0000 https://whichfilm.com/?p=7215 We at WhichFilm.com are seeking film reviewers for our website. You don’t need to be an expert. All we ask is that you’re honest and you have indeed watched the film you’re reviewing.

We have a lot of random users who check in and write the odd review. Most return, others don’t. What we want to do is build the largest review website of film and movie reviews by the general public rather than just movie critique’s.

Although it’s unpaid at the moment we are looking at ways to reward our consistent reviewers. This could be cash prizes or vouchers but we’re working on it and we’ll add news of this to the site when we can. If intersted then please read on and we look forward to reading your reviews on WhichFilm.com!

Reading, and writing reviews should be fun. They should also be written by the right people, yourselves!

A 50 year old “film expert” has no business telling us, or our children that they won’t enjoy an animation film because the direction is poor or that there is a lack of development in a cartoon horse during a 90 minute film! We only want to know if it’s worth watching and so do children. We can tell in just one or two sentences if a film will be worth watching.

At WhichFilm.com we encourage everyone of all ages to add their thoughts about a film, no matter how old you are. All we ask for is a name, which can be a pen name or pretend name, a star rating, from 1 to 5 stars, and a brief review! If you loved the film, simply write that you loved it. If it wasn’t the best film you have watched this month then let others know why.

We do not ask for your email address or any personal details.

The good thing about the travel website Booking.com is that people like you and me can leave honest reviews. We’re not paid to add them, and what’s better than a child telling other children what they thought of the film?

The one rule we do have is don’t copy a review from elsewhere. We have a system in place which will detect it so you’ll be wasting your time. Plus, we get into trouble if they are copied!

For those looking to spam or add links, honestly, don’t bother and save your time. Our system won’t even add it to the site.

If you’d like your children to practice writing on a keyboard and add their own reviews then we suggest you go to the Children page here: https://whichfilm.com/category/children/

This section only includes Children’s films with lots that they will recognise and most likely will have watched at some stage. By clicking on certain films they will also be able to read reviews of films they may be keen on watching with you at some point.

Most importantly, have fun watching films and reading and writing reviews.

Submitting Your Review

1) Find the page of the film you wish to review. If it is yet to be created please contact us and we’ll be happy to create it.

2) Just below the film image on the page, click the grey “Create your own Review” button.

3) Complete the form that appears including your name and rating. If you wish to be added to “Our Reviewers” list please contact us and we’ll set you up. The rating is currently based on one to five stars, one star being absolutely appalling, and five stars being a top quality film based on your opinion.

4) Add your review!

5) Check the box to suggest you are a human being.

6) Hit the Submit button!

Once submitted it will be added for our own review. If it’s good we’ll greenlight it and it should be live in a maximum of 48 hours.
