Really good movie, cleverly made!
Cloverfield is a haunting found footage film, it is tense, suspenseful and most importantly feels realistic. The characters and acting all fit beautifully helping to craft the belief that the situation is real. Meanwhile the horror element is superb, without spoiling anything all I can say is the film is not simply there is a monster destroying the city.
The atmosphere is amazing with the sounds of the monster being haunting, in fact sound as a whole was a masterclass. In a film where you don't get to see everything perfectly sound becomes so important ( just as in real life ) and this manipulation of the senses is perfect to create fear and realism.
The pacing is great and plot as a whole works well. The only let down is the usual horror film characters making poor decisions, the film is filled with poor decision making but that almost feels natural. I also enjoyed the surprises near the end that helped me believe the film was almost a secret Romeo and Juliet spinoff ( once you have watched you should understand).
Small Spoiler * The ending was powerful and despite being sad it was also to some extent hopeful and circular, in the end perhaps not everything was bad. These small details take Cloverfield from an enjoyable film to a great film even 11 years on!
