I have always been a fan of vampires, werewolves and other fantasy creatures and this movie portrays vampires like no other- as being vulnerable, weak and full of emotion in addition to being the hellish creatures that we often portray them as.

What I think makes this movie so well made is not the incredible cast, nor is it the directing or even the atmosphere created by lighting and music, but the fact that the screenplay was written by the author of the book it is based off- Anne Rice. Rice created an incredible set of characters and a storyline and this film certainly does them justice. Brad Pitt plays the melancholy Louis well, creating a character that it is able to sympathise with despite him being a killer. An almost unrecognisable Tom Cruise (who plays Lestat) is able to make the words Rice wrote when first describing the character come to life and plays the villain well as well as making him vulnerable enough that you just start to feel for him, finally able to break away from his ‘pretty boy’ stereotype.

The old vampire trapped in the body of a young child is performed well by a very young Kirsten Dunst while Antonio Banderas skilfully plays the wise vampire, Armand.

Finally, the casting of Christian Slater as the over-enthusiastic reporter Malloy, again, was a very good choice. Being both romantic, melancholy and beautiful as well as being able to be categorised as a horror it is well directed, thoroughly enjoyable and one of the most underrated movies of the 90’s.

It is the best vampire movie I have ever seen and the books are even better, however this is one of the rare cases where such a good book is done justice by its movie. Again, I would highly recommend as it is not only a vampire movie but a well written and touching movie that is absolutely spellbinding and something I could watch over and over again. I would definitely give it six stars if I could.
