Bohemian Rhapsody

Bohemian Rhapsody is a musical biopic of legendary performer Freddy Mercury, and the success of the rock band Queen, from their formation to their performance at Live Aid. Despite huge controversy with fired director Bryan Singer, Bohemian Rhapsody was the 7th most successful film in 2018 worldwide and brought Queen’s albums back into the charts as everyone was reminded of their talent. Bohemian Rhapsody is just as bright and edgy as the band, and I wasn’t bored for a second. Rami Malek is fully deserving of his Oscar nomination, as he embodies Freddy Mercury with spectacular charisma. Bohemian Rhapsody takes the audience on an exciting rollercoaster ride through Queen’s best hits and shows us how incredibly famous their music became. The biopic displays the importance of friendship and taking risks in a fun yet heartful manner. Hilarious one-liners – often from Freddie – generate huge laughs and I dare anyone not to sing along at some point during the film. The last 20 minutes follows Queen’s exact set at Live Aid and it is the perfect finale, making me both intensely happy and emotional.

Technically, Bohemian Rhapsody isn’t one of the best made films of the year by any stretch: there are flaws in the script and likely a multitude of other problems if you look more objectively. However, the problems that bothered me personally were the multitude of historical inaccuracies, some of which were major to the plot, and the extremely brief way his AIDS diagnosis was covered. I would have preferred to watch his health deteriorate more and see even further into Freddie’s personal life.

Overall, Bohemian Rhapsody is the perfect family film and anyone who has ever listened to a Queen song will surely be left with a smile on their face by the end. I had so much fun watching this biopic and I expect I will continue to do so in future viewings, as the magic of Freddy Mercury can never grow old.
