Sexy DC action movie
Having watching this film 3 times already this year, I can confirm that Wonder Woman is my favourite DC superhero so far.
I found this film enjoyable and interesting
Gal Gadot has played Wonder Woman so well and it has changed some of the stereotypes of female superheroes.
However it is not the superhero movie for younger viewers unless they are fine watching things that may inappropriate for them to see.
It is better than Batman v Superman Dawn of Justice which had Wonder Woman in it but I thought that this one with Wonder Woman only was actually easier to understand than that one.
It is worth watching.
Teenagers and Adults will love this but younger viewers may not love it as much.
2017 was a rather good year for films: Guardians of the Galaxy Vol II, Blade Runner, Baby-Driver and Spider-man – the list is endless and as always, there is a list of films that fell short, but there is one film that really excelled last year: Wonder Woman.
I am a huge fan of the Marvel and DC universe but one thing they both have (amongst many other films in other genres) been lacking is a well-crafted and executed film with a strong female lead. I often find myself avoiding films with female leads because nine times out of ten the women are poorly portrayed or so ridiculously stereotyped that it’s incredibly cringe worthy to watch – the 2004 Catwoman film a prime example of this. Wonder Woman seems the herald of a new age where female leads are no longer laughable and DC have produced a film with an understandable storyline. These strong women have been starting to appear in DC’s TV shows – notably Sara Lance in Legends of Tomorrow and Iris West in The Flash so it’s very refreshing to now see it on ‘the big screen.’
The first opening sweep on Themyscira and the warrior Amazons filled me with an almost indescribable sense of awe and inspiration. The location and cinematography is incredibly well done and stunning, adding to this sense of amazement I felt when I first saw it. The fight scenes are well choreographed and believable which immediately immerses you in the film which is often quite a difficult skill to achieve! This full immersion allows the film to perfectly play on your heartstrings and wreak havoc on your emotions.
Gal Gadot plays the fierce and principled Diana with excellence showing raw emotion and steel throughout the film. It is a very large mantle to take on the role of Wonder Woman but Gadot did it with seeming ease. Another standout performance in this film was Chris Pine. He added humour, helped ground the film and the chemistry between his character - Steve Trevor - and Diana was so pure and expertly performed by Gadot and Pine. The relationship between these two characters was critical to the success of this film; it represents an incorruptible force that had been lost in the warring world that Diana launches herself into. Also, it subverts the typical gender roles we see in film in that Diana is the assured leader and protector of everyone that doesn’t need saving by a man.
This film isn’t perfect: the dialogue is occasionally sacrificed in large action sequences but it is a success nonetheless. It finally gives young girls, especially, a female superhero to be inspired by that is strong, emotional, intelligent and fierce. I came out of the cinema believing that I could achieve anything I wished and never before have I had that feeling when coming out of a female-lead action film. Wonder Woman was a complete blessing to DC who have been struggling to produce quality films compared to rivals, Marvel. Her presence in Justice League was enjoyable (despite the films largely underwhelming story) and I truly hope that Diana’s wonderful legacy continues in the sequel Wonder Woman 1984. This is a film that I would not hesitate to recommend; if you’re looking for action, romance, emotion and stunning cinematography then you have found it all in Wonder Woman.
