Some decent slasher moments with a neat twist and few laughs

 by Morgan Donaghy

This film is near impossible to review without spoiling it, so I will instead keep it simple. The direction by Peele is once again fantastic (just like in Get Out) and the soundtrack is both haunting and enjoyable with a marvelous lingering effect. The film itself is slated as a horror but personally it plays more as a psychological thriller that has some horror elements but this is exactly what is needed and helps the film.

The story takes many original directions that are by no means expected as a whole is not too predictable. The formatting of the story is brilliant and links back to create (as I call it ) the Golden circle, when a films beginning reaches its end while having advanced the story. The actors are amazing with particularly memorable performances by Lupita Nyong'o and Evan Alex. However, every actor does a great job.

The film leaves a haunting effect that should have you thinking (at the very least) for days, the message of the film is both clear and hidden with the theme of duality showing through the many different messages. This is not a complaint though rather the greatest achievement of the film, this film deserves multiple viewings and I am confident each time I do I will find more and more 11;11 throughout it.

All I can say is this film is great and everything about it is near equal, it is also quite funny. Don't expect a Get Out type film because this is different, just as you wouldn't expect Friday the 13th to be the same as a nightmare on Elm street. I'm sure if you watch this you will be thinking over the film for days to come! 5/5
