As I like Mr and Mrs Smith, I had this movie recommended to me but for the first half an hour, I was highly disappointed as it started out very slowly but once it got going it was actually highly enjoyable. It was cleverly written and very amusing, effectively portraying a couple going through a divorce while making it humorous and not too serious. Michael Douglass, Danny DeVito and Kathleen Turner effectively create three dimensional characters that are easy to sympathise with and create an opinion on as if they were real people. As well as starring in this movie, DeVito also directs it, with a clear influence from Alfred Hitchcock’s movies (especially Vertigo). This movie has everything from a clever script, to great chemistry and plenty of humour without it ever being particularly cringy or cliché.
Not my favourite movie but it doesn’t stop it being humorous, well written and well-acted with a brilliant score by David Newman who has scored many of my favourite movies (e.g: Heathers) and is excellent at developing the atmosphere of a movie.
