Shot through Wes Andersons distinctive and unique eye, Moonrise Kingdom tells the coming-of-age story of an orphaned scout who escapes from camp to meet up with his first love who runs away from home to through Suzy’s parents who are dealing with cheating and countless arguments, live in the wild alone. I like how the children are not portrayed as simply immature and clueless, as we conversely see this sense of immaturity in Suzy’s cheating and arguing mother and father as well as Sam’s adopted parents who refuse to let him back in their home, but more complex and forward thinking, avoiding undermining youth like many films do. This movie is set in the 60’s in New England and has an incredibly retro feel, which helps emphasise nostalgic feelings of the wonder of your first love, which will likely be relatable to many who will watch this. I don’t think the plot is the best or particularly gripping and I feel like it is very idealised in order to convey nostalgia but regardless, I would recommend this film for a light viewing.
