Mandrake starts off as an intense Irish drama with excellent acting amongst a dark suburban backdrop. You can feel the mysteriousness as our protagonist goes about her work as a supervising officer helping former criminals on probation.

It has a good portion of creepiness, helped mostly by the acting although the music and sounds are eerily good too. What Mandrake does best is keep you hooked, you want to keep watching and that's not something you get these days, particularly in horror films.

The main person on probation carries the nickname 'Bloody' Mary Laidlaw who is tagged, but when two children go missing near her home an investigation begins. Turns out Mary has some skills with clairvoyance and possibly potions and we then get to see where Mandrake is heading.

There's a couple of twists that will have you thinking as the probation officers continue to search for clues on the missing children and it appears there are more involved than first meets the eye.

Mandrake might not be the best Shudder have produced but it is engaging and you'll want to watch till the end to find out exactly what the Mandrake is. It does get incredibly horrific and creepy.
