Never before have I appreciated animation as I did while watching ‘Coco’. In fact, I believe that it would be harder not to notice the sheer art that is present in the film, than to do so. It oozes with colour and love in every aspect; gorgeous right from the visuals down to the storyline. With every detail, you can sense the work that has gone into making it, and it pays off.
The animation quite literally took my breath away at two moments in particular - firstly, when the protagonist Miguel is crossing the bridge to the Land of the Dead, and looks upwards at the stacked buildings and glowing lights. These were simply beautiful, and the perfect introduction to the setting for the majority of the story. Secondly, at one point when Miguel is in a lake, his hair and skin interacting with the water looked so realistic. It was incredible.
An absolutely breathtaking film, and a lovely tribute to a culture that isn’t often represented in mainstream Western media.
