The original Monster Hunt was a huge success in China, infact becoming the highest film there, so a sequel was almost naturally expected and here we have it.
If Monster Hunt was a huge success, then Monster Hunt 2 is not a fitting sequel at all. First of all, the director opts to use a faster-paced storytelling that constantly puts the main character in dangerous situations leading to minimal character development in the movie.
Too much time is also spent on Tu Sigu, a character played by the very famous Tony Leung Chiu-wai, but those scenes seems to have been put there to serve some cheap laughs and they drag for too long, much to the detriment of the movie’s rating.
There is minimal storytelling along the way as it moves from one setpiece to the other and the editing job is not the best or what you would expect from the sequel to such a successful movie.
While the story is not the most memorable, admittedly, the set is one of the most gorgeous ever with really scenic natural designs and some really nice costumes.
