I was dreading watching The Black Demon. I knew the title, had seen the rating and just wasn't looking forward to it. I can safely say I was pleasantly surprised, not so much by the special FX but the story and the characters.
The Black Demon didn't come with the Hollywood budget of The Meg obviously, and that shows but it doesn't distract from the horror of a massive shark swimming around an old oil rig.
Prior to that The Black Demon gives us a little tension where the family are trapped in a small Mexican village with who I would probably best describe as "undesirables" - their quick escape putting them into a much more terrifying situation.
It's on the oil rig that we start to learn more about what has happend and why, and who is really to blame for a monster shark attacking what likely used to be a lovely little area of ocean.
The acting in The Black Demon works well, no need for 'superstar' actors and to be honest I couldn't fault any of them. I'm pretty sure, but can't be certain as I've not checked, but one of the oil rig characters could well be "Poison" from the acclaimed Netflix series "Narcos".
The ending of The Black Demon is something many might disagree with but it's different and that's what many want these days. Fans of shark films, both of good and bad films, will enjoy this one I am sure.
