Mortal Kombat, released in 2021, is a highly anticipated reboot of the iconic video game franchise. Directed by Simon McQuoid, the film brings the brutal and visceral world of Mortal Kombat to the big screen, delivering a thrilling and action-packed experience for both fans and newcomers alike.

The story centers around Cole Young (Lewis Tan), a washed-up mixed martial arts fighter who finds himself drawn into an ancient tournament known as Mortal Kombat. As Earthrealm's champions face off against the ruthless warriors of Outworld, Cole must unlock his hidden potential and discover the true power within him to protect the Earth from impending doom.

One of the film's strengths lies in its faithful adaptation of the Mortal Kombat lore. From the iconic characters to the intense and bloody fights, Mortal Kombat captures the essence of the video game franchise and pays homage to its beloved elements. Fans of the games will appreciate the attention to detail and the inclusion of signature moves and fatalities.

The fight sequences in Mortal Kombat are the true highlight of the film. They are choreographed with precision and skill, showcasing the unique fighting styles and special abilities of each character. The action is fast-paced, brutal, and visually impressive, delivering the intense and gory battles that fans have come to expect from the franchise.

The cast of Mortal Kombat brings their characters to life with conviction and dedication. Lewis Tan gives a solid performance as Cole Young, the audience's entry point into the world of Mortal Kombat. The ensemble cast, including Joe Taslim as Sub-Zero, Hiroyuki Sanada as Scorpion, and Josh Lawson as Kano, all deliver memorable portrayals that stay true to their respective characters.

The film does a commendable job of expanding the Mortal Kombat universe, introducing new characters and exploring their backstories while staying true to the established mythology. While some characters receive more development than others, there is enough depth to keep viewers invested in their individual journeys.

Visually, Mortal Kombat is impressive, with its detailed production design, vibrant costumes, and well-executed special effects. The film successfully captures the otherworldly environments of the Mortal Kombat universe, transporting viewers to realms filled with danger and mystique.

However, where Mortal Kombat falls slightly short is in its narrative and pacing. The plot can feel rushed at times, with certain character arcs and storylines lacking the necessary depth and development. Some may find themselves wanting more exploration of the intricate lore and emotional stakes.

Despite its narrative flaws, Mortal Kombat remains an entertaining and adrenaline-fueled ride that caters to fans' expectations. It embraces the violent and over-the-top nature of the video game franchise, delivering exhilarating action, memorable characters, and a sense of nostalgia. If you're a fan of Mortal Kombat or simply enjoy action-packed films with a dose of fantasy, Mortal Kombat is a worthy watch.

Got there in the end but still not perfect. Doubt we'll see another come this close in our lifetime.
