For fans of Mel Gibson, this was another opportunity for him to indulge in his biggest obsession as a movie maker and he goes over and beyond to delight his fan base.
At first I thought this was just a normal war movie, well, it turned out to be more than one. It is a movie about one man’s faith as well as his determination not to allow his fellow comrades die alone, and he relies entirely on God to help him rescue them.
If you have never experienced war, this movie would show you first hand just how cruel it can be and help you build your empathy towards those who are fleeing war-torn countries.
I have been meaning to watch this film since it came out in 2016 and I am ashamed to say that I have only just got around to watching it. I say I’m ashamed because it turned out to be one of the most inspiring, emotionally challenging and shocking films I have watched.
The double Oscar winning film is based on the true story of Desmond T.Doss who was a conscientious objector and American Army medic during the Second World War. He is regarded as one of America’s greatest heroes and he never fired a bullet. The film follows his struggle to be accepted as a conscientious objector and his deployment to Japan at the battle of Okinawa which was one of the major battles of the Pacific War near the end of World War II.
This Mel Gibson film does not hold back on its intensity with the violence and gore perhaps a little excessive but I argue against myself here as it was simply the reality of what these soldiers had to experience. Throughout the complete and utter chaos of this war, Desmond remains unarmed which just makes it even more terrifying for the audience! Andrew Garfield does a stunning performance as Desmond with a sensitivity that he always proves he has.
It would be easy to believe that the film was simply fiction because the story it tells feels like more of a miracle. This is an absolutely gripping watch that refuels your belief in humanity as well as reminding oneself of the brutality of the war these soldiers were fighting and the terrible sights they had to see day in and day out.
Do not wait as long as I did to watch this film!
