Which Film is considered the best Action Film ever? https://whichfilm.com/which-film-is-considered-the-best-action-film-ever/ Wed, 24 May 2023 21:01:46 +0000 https://whichfilm.com/?p=10048 With the release of action film John Wick: Chapter 4 upon us we decided to take a look at what could be considered the best action film ever.

Determining the best action film of the 2000s can be subjective, as different movies cater to various tastes and preferences. However, one film that often emerges as a popular choice and a defining action movie of that decade is “The Dark Knight” (2008), directed by Christopher Nolan.

“The Dark Knight” is a superhero film based on the DC Comics character Batman. It serves as the sequel to “Batman Begins” (2005) and features Christian Bale reprising his role as Batman/Bruce Wayne. The film introduces the iconic villain, the Joker, portrayed by the late Heath Ledger, who won a posthumous Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his mesmerizing performance.

What sets “The Dark Knight” apart is its dark and gritty tone, exploring complex themes of morality, chaos, and the nature of heroism. The film delves into the psychological and ethical struggles faced by Batman as he confronts the Joker, a chaotic force challenging his beliefs and pushing him to his limits.

“The Dark Knight” is known for its compelling storytelling, strong performances, and intense action sequences. Christopher Nolan’s direction brings a grounded and realistic approach to the superhero genre, emphasizing practical effects and stunt work. The film’s set pieces, such as the thrilling Batman versus Joker chase scene and the explosive finale, are executed with precision and create a sense of tension and excitement.

Heath Ledger’s portrayal of the Joker is widely regarded as one of the greatest performances in cinema history. His portrayal of the iconic villain is chilling, captivating, and unpredictable, leaving an indelible mark on the genre. Ledger’s posthumous Oscar win further solidified his contribution to “The Dark Knight” and elevated the film’s status.

“The Dark Knight” was not only a critical success but also a box office phenomenon, grossing over a billion dollars worldwide. Its impact on the superhero genre and action filmmaking as a whole cannot be overstated. The film raised the bar for what could be achieved in terms of storytelling, character development, and action sequences within the genre.

While “The Dark Knight” is often cited as the best action film of the 2000s, it’s worth noting that there were other notable contenders during that decade. Films like “The Bourne Identity” (2002) and its sequels, “Kill Bill: Volume 1” (2003), “Gladiator” (2000), and “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” (2000) also left a significant impact and have their own dedicated fan bases.

The 1990s was a decade that produced several exceptional action films, making it challenging to pinpoint a definitive “best” action film. However, one film often hailed as one of the greatest action movies of the 1990s is “Terminator 2: Judgment Day” (1991), directed by James Cameron.

“Terminator 2: Judgment Day” is a science fiction action film and a sequel to the 1984 film “The Terminator.” The movie stars Arnold Schwarzenegger, Linda Hamilton, and Edward Furlong. In this installment, a new and more advanced Terminator, the T-1000 (Robert Patrick), is sent back in time to kill a young John Connor (Edward Furlong), the future leader of the human resistance. The original Terminator (Arnold Schwarzenegger), now reprogrammed to protect John, becomes his ally as they try to prevent the apocalyptic future.

What sets “Terminator 2: Judgment Day” apart is its groundbreaking visual effects, particularly the seamless integration of computer-generated imagery (CGI) and practical effects. The film’s action sequences are intense and well-crafted, showcasing the relentless pursuit of the T-1000 and the strength of the reprogrammed Terminator. The iconic truck chase scene and the climactic showdown at the steel mill remain etched in the minds of audiences.

In addition to its technical achievements, the film benefits from strong performances, particularly from Linda Hamilton as the fierce and determined Sarah Connor, who undergoes significant character development throughout the story. Arnold Schwarzenegger’s portrayal of the Terminator is also highly memorable, blending his trademark stoicism with moments of unexpected humor.

“Terminator 2: Judgment Day” received critical acclaim upon its release and became a box office sensation. It won four Academy Awards, including Best Visual Effects, and solidified James Cameron’s reputation as a master of action cinema. The film’s impact on popular culture is undeniable, and it continues to be regarded as a benchmark for action filmmaking.

While “Terminator 2: Judgment Day” is often cited as one of the best action films of the 1990s, it’s worth noting that opinions on the “best” film can vary among individuals. Other notable action films from the 1990s include “Die Hard 2: Die Harder” (1990), “Speed” (1994), “The Matrix” (1999), and “Léon: The Professional” (1994), among others, each bringing its own unique style and contribution to the genre.

Which Film is considered the best action film of the 1980’s?

When it comes to determining the best action film of the 1980s, there are several highly regarded contenders that have left a lasting impact on the genre. One film often cited as the best action film of that decade is “Die Hard” (1988), directed by John McTiernan.

“Die Hard” stars Bruce Willis in his breakout role as John McClane, a New York City police officer who finds himself trapped in a Los Angeles skyscraper during a hostage situation orchestrated by a group of terrorists led by Hans Gruber, played by Alan Rickman. McClane must use his resourcefulness, wit, and physical prowess to outsmart the terrorists and save the hostages, including his estranged wife.

What sets “Die Hard” apart is its innovative approach to the action genre. Rather than featuring an invincible hero, the film presents a vulnerable and relatable protagonist in John McClane, who gets hurt, bleeds, and faces overwhelming odds. This shift in the portrayal of action heroes helped redefine the genre for years to come.

The film is known for its tightly constructed plot, intense action sequences, and memorable one-liners. It combines thrilling gunfights, explosive set pieces, and clever cat-and-mouse scenarios to create an exhilarating and suspenseful experience. Bruce Willis delivers a charismatic performance, displaying both vulnerability and resilience as McClane. Alan Rickman’s portrayal of the sophisticated and cunning Hans Gruber is also widely acclaimed and contributed to making him an iconic villain.

“Die Hard” was a critical and commercial success upon its release and spawned a successful franchise with several sequels. It has since become a benchmark for action films, influencing countless movies in its wake. The film’s impact on the genre is evident in the term “Die Hard on a _____” frequently used to describe films with similar premises.

While “Die Hard” is often regarded as the best action film of the 1980s, it’s worth noting that there were other exceptional contenders during that decade. Films like “Raiders of the Lost Ark” (1981), “Predator” (1987), “Lethal Weapon” (1987), and “The Terminator” (1984) also left an indelible mark on the action genre and continue to be highly regarded by audiences and critics alike.

Which Film is considered the best action film of the 1970’s?

When discussing the best action film of the 1970s, one film often stands out as a groundbreaking and influential entry in the genre: “Enter the Dragon” (1973), directed by Robert Clouse and starring Bruce Lee.

“Enter the Dragon” is a martial arts action film that showcases Bruce Lee’s exceptional talent and charisma. The movie tells the story of Lee, a martial arts expert and undercover agent who is invited to a martial arts tournament on a private island. While participating in the tournament, he uncovers a criminal organization involved in drug trafficking and slavery. Lee must use his formidable skills to expose and dismantle the operation.

What sets “Enter the Dragon” apart is its stylish and dynamic fight choreography, executed by Bruce Lee himself. His lightning-fast movements and distinct martial arts philosophy captivated audiences around the world and revolutionized the representation of martial arts on film. The action sequences are intense, fluid, and incredibly well-executed, making the film a visual spectacle.

Beyond the action, “Enter the Dragon” also addresses themes of honor, justice, and the power of self-discipline. Bruce Lee’s philosophy and teachings are woven throughout the narrative, elevating the film beyond its action-packed sequences.

Unfortunately, Bruce Lee passed away shortly before the film’s release, adding an aura of tragedy and mystique to his final completed work. However, “Enter the Dragon” solidified his legacy and introduced him to a global audience, making him an international icon and a symbol of martial arts excellence.

“Enter the Dragon” was not only a critical and commercial success but also had a profound impact on the action genre, influencing future martial arts films and popularizing martial arts in Western cinema. Its success paved the way for the rise of martial arts action stars and inspired countless filmmakers and martial artists alike.

While other notable action films were released in the 1970s, such as “Dirty Harry” (1971), “The French Connection” (1971), and “The Warriors” (1979), “Enter the Dragon” stands out as a groundbreaking and culturally significant film that encapsulates the spirit and prowess of Bruce Lee. Its impact on the action genre and its enduring popularity continue to make it widely regarded as one of the best action films of the 1970s.

Whilst “Die Hard” is frequently mentioned as a top contender for the best action film of all time, it’s essential to acknowledge that there are numerous other exceptional entries in the genre. Films like “Terminator 2: Judgment Day” (1991), “Raiders of the Lost Ark” (1981), “Mad Max: Fury Road” (2015), and “The Dark Knight” (2008) are often cited as contenders for the title, each offering distinct strengths and leaving their own indelible marks on the genre.

Which Film Is The Highest Grossing Of All Time? (Adjusted For Inflation) https://whichfilm.com/which-film-is-the-highest-grossing-of-all-time/ Fri, 12 Aug 2022 14:56:20 +0000 https://whichfilm.com/?p=7906 This is perhaps one of the toughest questions you can ask when it comes to the film industry. Things like inflation have changed things so much since film and cinema began you can’t just grab a Marvel film and say there you go!

You also need to consider the cost of an entry ticket. It might cost you $10 or £5 to gain entry now but in the 60’s it was just £0.36 in the UK or $0.50 in the US.

Sadly it was really hard finding out the number of cinemas and outlets at the time of the film, or the number of tickets sold, so we were pretty damned before we started. It would be fair to estimate that the amount of cinemas now compared to 1960 are at least 100 fold at the very least.

With the help of certain online sources, a calculator and plenty of coffee, here is our top five grossing films adjusted for inflation starting last to first!

5) Avengers: Endgame

Well there had to be one Marvel film in the list didn’t there! Endgame was hugely popular in 2019 following its build up from Infinity Wars but the total gross has been calculated to match that of 2020 so it could be debated.

$2,811,000,000

If Avengers: Endgame had been released, say, the same time as James Bond’s From Russia With Love in 1963 – a rough gross would have been $306,947,426.10 – but bear in mind, in 1963 there were less places to watch films, less places to see an advertisement and less ways of getting to the cinema to watch in the first place.

4) Star Wars: A New Hope

The most popular of all the Star Wars films, this was a big one back in 1977, I even recall my uncle saying he remembers watching it whilst smoking! Anyway, Star Wars was very popular, and its worldwide gross was appx $200m better than Avengers above

$3,059,000,000

3) Titanic (1997)

Who would have thought that so many people would spend so much money watching a ship hit and ice berg and sink? James Cameron obviously did, or at least he thought Di Caprio’s good looks would bring in some extra millions. At number three it’s adjusted figure is:

$3,096,000,000

Only a smidgen above Star Wars but with 20 years difference you can see why it would have pipped the George Luca sci-fi.

2) Avatar (2009)

I recall Avatar vividly. There was a HUGE advertising campaign. You couldn’t get away from it. It’s gross is astonishing nonetheless but you take away it’s budget and advertising costs of $246m and you end up with the second figure.

$3,273,000,000
$3,027,000,000 (net) includes marketing/advertising.

I’m aware this is based on adjusted figures but it does give a flavour of where films could be when you take out costs. A little more on that as we reach number one…

1) Gone With The Wind (1939)

Gone With The Wind was simply a beast at the time and still is. You recall we mentioned the budget for Avatar at appx $246m – well, the Clark Gable and Vivien Leigh classic, when adjusted for inflation comes in at $81,475,900 for costs, $3.85m if you ignore inflation.

Given Gone With The Wind was released on the start of World War 2, and with so little cinemas compared to now, it’s actual box office gross even back then of $390m+ is something very special.

$3,724,000,000

It’s impossible to calculate the exact figures. Some of the films in this list would likely not even make the top five if it could be worked out 100% correctly by a super computer. The next time you hear of a film breaking box office records, bear a thought for the films of the past which quite rightly would have smashed the current box office hit be it not for some lazy maths.

Some other honourable mentioned that we found on wikipedia are The Sound of Music, E.T., Doctoer Zhivago and Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Is Marvel In Danger of Getting Too Crazy? https://whichfilm.com/is-marvel-in-danger-of-getting-too-crazy/ Thu, 11 Aug 2022 15:06:18 +0000 https://whichfilm.com/?p=7830 Avengers: End Game was a truly fitting end to the previous phase of Marvel’s superhero films. It had taken them since 2008 to create, build and develop the likes of Iron Man, Captain America, Thor and Hulk into the perfect melting pot of heroism and then end the phase with a few deaths.

A few series later, like WandaVision, Hawkeye and Ms Marvel, plus films like Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness and Thor: Love and Thunder it seems to be starting all over again.

However, with Marvel director Feige having already announced what, and when the next two Avenger films will be about, there is reason to be concerned. Not least because there appears to be a build up of such fantasy that Earths heroes won’t just be fighting a super villain but also fighting villains with both time and reality as a weapon.

Yes, Thanos didn’t really use his time and reality stones much, but will some of these villains simply be able to turn back time and cause different realities and universes? If they don’t use that power, as we expect Kang to do, why not? Because they could really kill off all characters very quickly if they use the power they have to hand properly.

With Doctor Strange, could he not simply use dead bodies again to solve issues, go to another universe, go back in time (as they did in Endgame) to resolve any problems?

It might be over analysing, but for good reason. Marvel need to keep the next two phases water tight, as too much craziness will confuse the younger viewers, perhaps even the more hardcore Marvel fans amongst us.

Those familiar with the comics will say, “nothing to worry about”, but we shall have to see. The ratings of the latest Doctor Strange, and Thor have already hit lower star ratings than all before it, and Marvel should deem that as a warning.

Two Movies To Squeeze in Tonight https://whichfilm.com/two-movies-to-squeeze-in-tonight/ Thu, 04 Aug 2022 12:23:54 +0000 https://whichfilm.com/?p=7398 If everything goes according to plan, you should be home and fed with enough time to fit two movies in each night, if that’s your thing of course.

So, at WhichFilm.com, one of our colleagues has thought we could offer up some ideas on two films to watch each night starting with this one as the very first.

Most films will be watchable either through streaming or purchasing online to watch.

We start off with Albatross (2022) See reviews here. Albatross is one of the best films we’ve seen in recent weeks and one we highly recommend. It’s a darkly lit drama that explores race and sexuality with a twist of mystery that will keep you watching right to the end.

Watch Albatross With Apple TV Here:

Next up is something with a bit more power in Top Gun: Maverick (2022) – some claim it’s better than the first. I personally think it runs things close. If you can’t watch it at the theater anymore then make sure you have the biggest widescreen and loudest TV you can find and turn it right up. It’s got all the action you want plus there’s plenty of links to the first Top Gun which makes it unmissable.

Watch Top Gun:Maverick on Amazon Prime

Five Ocean Films (You may not have heard of) To Watch This Weekend https://whichfilm.com/five-ocean-films-you-may-not-have-heard-of-to-watch-this-weekend/ Tue, 02 Aug 2022 16:47:03 +0000 https://whichfilm.com/?p=7342 There is something about films that relate to the Ocean that attract an audience. Maybe it’s our deep roots to the water that keeps us attracted. Ask most people where they’d like to retire and the percentage of those that say “by the sea” will be in the high nineties!

Here we list five films based in the Ocean that you might not have seen before. For the hard core film buffs amongst you we apologise in advance if you’ve seen all of them 🙂

5) Warlords of Atlantis (1978)

This classic, starring an attractive Doug McClure is somewhat landbased in the middle of the film, but the start and end of this film features great Ocean scenes with a ship that is attacked not once, but twice by a huge Octopus. There are also some fabulous underwater scenes where yet again, the protagonists are attacked by a different sea creature.

Those sporting actor spotting eyes will notice a very young John Ratzenberger, whilst Bond fans will hopefully pick up on one the most famous of James Bond characters but we won’t spoil you with who it is!

4) Deep Rising (1998)

It’s an Ocean Liner attacked by a very strange but hugely large sea monster. The film has a number of twists throughout and it is as tongue in cheek as you can get. Unfortunately most of the ocean views are in the dark but it has that mystery about it and will leave you wondering what could still be lurking in the deep waters yet unexplored. Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels fans may note a young cockney mercenary onboard too.

3) 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea (1997)

We were always going to mention one of them weren’t we and we decided to go not with the 1954 classic, or even the first one all the way back in 1916.

We thought one you may not have seen yet is the 1997 take with Michael Caine and Patrick Dempsey. Not only are the visuals more appealing but there is more of a build up before we get to see the Ocean and Captain Nemo doing his thing.

2) Humanoids From The Deep (1980)

Five points to you if you have seen HUmanoids From The Deep (1980). It is another film with Doug McClure and somewhat shares a bit of the open seas with some river monsters and some horrific horror scenes. It is perhaps still as scary now as it was back on but most interestingly, subjects such as racism and sexism are discussed then just as much as they are now.

1) Leviathan (1989)

More under the ocean than above it, George P. Cosmatos’ sci-fi horror is a great film worth watching any time of the week. It features Robocop (Peter Weller) himself who is always worth watching and its underwater scenes are truly terrifying.

Oddly, as Leviathan was released at the same time as Alien and DeepStar Six, it didn’t get the reviews it was worthy of and perhaps not the recognition it deserved back in 1989. For us it’s certainly a fine and final addition to the list.

WhichFilm Seeking Film Reviewers https://whichfilm.com/whichfilm-seeking-film-reviewers/ Sat, 30 Jul 2022 12:14:04 +0000 https://whichfilm.com/?p=7215 We at WhichFilm.com are seeking film reviewers for our website. You don’t need to be an expert. All we ask is that you’re honest and you have indeed watched the film you’re reviewing.

We have a lot of random users who check in and write the odd review. Most return, others don’t. What we want to do is build the largest review website of film and movie reviews by the general public rather than just movie critique’s.

Although it’s unpaid at the moment we are looking at ways to reward our consistent reviewers. This could be cash prizes or vouchers but we’re working on it and we’ll add news of this to the site when we can. If intersted then please read on and we look forward to reading your reviews on WhichFilm.com!

Reading, and writing reviews should be fun. They should also be written by the right people, yourselves!

A 50 year old “film expert” has no business telling us, or our children that they won’t enjoy an animation film because the direction is poor or that there is a lack of development in a cartoon horse during a 90 minute film! We only want to know if it’s worth watching and so do children. We can tell in just one or two sentences if a film will be worth watching.

At WhichFilm.com we encourage everyone of all ages to add their thoughts about a film, no matter how old you are. All we ask for is a name, which can be a pen name or pretend name, a star rating, from 1 to 5 stars, and a brief review! If you loved the film, simply write that you loved it. If it wasn’t the best film you have watched this month then let others know why.

We do not ask for your email address or any personal details.

The good thing about the travel website Booking.com is that people like you and me can leave honest reviews. We’re not paid to add them, and what’s better than a child telling other children what they thought of the film?

The one rule we do have is don’t copy a review from elsewhere. We have a system in place which will detect it so you’ll be wasting your time. Plus, we get into trouble if they are copied!

For those looking to spam or add links, honestly, don’t bother and save your time. Our system won’t even add it to the site.

If you’d like your children to practice writing on a keyboard and add their own reviews then we suggest you go to the Children page here: https://whichfilm.com/category/children/

This section only includes Children’s films with lots that they will recognise and most likely will have watched at some stage. By clicking on certain films they will also be able to read reviews of films they may be keen on watching with you at some point.

Most importantly, have fun watching films and reading and writing reviews.

Submitting Your Review

1) Find the page of the film you wish to review. If it is yet to be created please contact us and we’ll be happy to create it.

2) Just below the film image on the page, click the grey “Create your own Review” button.

3) Complete the form that appears including your name and rating. If you wish to be added to “Our Reviewers” list please contact us and we’ll set you up. The rating is currently based on one to five stars, one star being absolutely appalling, and five stars being a top quality film based on your opinion.

4) Add your review!

5) Check the box to suggest you are a human being.

6) Hit the Submit button!

Once submitted it will be added for our own review. If it’s good we’ll greenlight it and it should be live in a maximum of 48 hours.

Best 3 Movies to Watch August 2022 https://whichfilm.com/best-3-movies-to-watch-august-2022/ Fri, 29 Jul 2022 19:13:16 +0000 https://whichfilm.com/?p=7099 It’s that month where we could have a summer blockbuster. August looks to be back to its best after the pandemic saw movies being flung this way and that. This list, although short, seems to prove we’re back to normal.

3. Bullet Train

Bradd Pitt and Sandra Bullock return to the big screen. Bullet Train is about five assassins trapped on a fast moving train which will provide action and likely plenty of comedic moments.

2. Beast

Idris Elba stars as Dr Nate Daniels in a survival-thriller movie that has been talked about for some time. Directed by Baltasar Kormákur, the only problem we currently see with this movie is that we’re going to have to wait to the end of August to see it.

1. Nope

The new Jordan Peele film has been taled about as far as Alpha Centauri and for good reason. This mystery is one everyone wants to watch and solve asap.

Five Space Movies To Watch This Weekend https://whichfilm.com/five-space-movies-to-watch-this-weekend/ Wed, 01 Sep 2021 08:30:23 +0000 https://whichfilm.com/?p=7346 If it’s one of those weekends which isn’t going to end up being a heatwave, or it’s pouring with rain and you love space movies then this list of five films should give you something to think about.

We haven’t listed the obvious either so you will do well to have watched all five of them already. For example films like Star Wars or Alien aren’t included. Have a look yourself and see which one’s you can watch this weekend.

5) Countdown (1967)

James Caan and Robert Duvall join up for the first time in this sci-fi thriller which is based on the USA racing the Soviet Union to the moon. Not just a visit to the moon but to get an astronaut up there and to keep him there and surviving for a whole year.

Although “groundbased” for a while at the start, it moves onto space and the challenges the astronaut has in getting to the right location with his team right behind him, well a few thousand miles behind him at Houston.

4) Moon (2009)

Another film based on the moon, and yes, the title gives it away, is Moon from 2009 starring Sam Rockwell and Kevin Spacey. It is a good tense mystery movie that doesn’t fail to deliver as it becomes more and more mysterious as it goes on. If you ever feel lonely again, spare a thought for the guy on the moon in this one!

3) Event Horizon (1997)

Maybe the most popular on this list which most, if not all space fans have watched is Event Horizon. To be honest I’m personally still waiting for part two as it’s certainly a possibility. Space is horrifying enough but add in a ship that may have actually visited hell itself, and with great acting by Sam Neill and Laurence Fishburne and you have the makings for a terrific yet horrific space horror.

2) Murder In Space (1985)

Normally, any murdering done in space is enacted by a monster or creature previously unknown to us. Murder In Space is a bit different and this 1985 movie is well worth the watch on a rainy weekend. Starring Wilford Brimley and Michael Ironside who you are sure to recognise from Total Recall, albeit short, Murder In Space is one to add to your list for a bit of a space fuelled killing spree.

1) 2010 (1984)

Unknown to many, 2010 is actually the sequel to Stanley Kubrick’s 1968 2001: A Space Odyssey but don’t let that put you off 🙂

With Roy Scheider, Helen Mirren, Bob Balaban and John Lithgow all starring, 2010 is somewhat scary without trying to be and is mysterious enough to keep you watching to the end. It also almost doubled its budget at the box office.

The ending is spectacular and who knows? Maybe even possible in the future, especially with those chilly December weekends!

Best Five Movies to Watch September 2021 https://whichfilm.com/best-five-movies-to-watch-september-2021/ Sat, 28 Aug 2021 08:53:47 +0000 https://whichfilm.com/?p=7056 Autumn might be on its way but September still brings a few rays of sunshine. September is not generally amonth that has blockbusters but with Covid rife over the last 18 months it has thrown most releases out of whack. We might only get to see No Time To Die in October this year which is one we should have watched months ago.

Here’s our top five for September 2021!

5. Cinderella (2021)

A new, musical version of Cinderella, starring Minnie Driver, Billy Porter, Idina Menzel, and Pierce Brosnan.

This version of Cinderella will be interpreted much differently to the norm and will be going straight to Amazon Prime.

4. Dear Evan Hansen (2021)

A high school student becomes entangled in such a large web of lies after the suicide of his friend. This musical should be a hit given its cast that includes Amy Adams, Ben Platt and Julianne Moore, however question marks remain on how close it is to the Broadway version.

3. Malignant (2021)

A woman who suffers from repetitive nightmares about violent murders, only to discover her dreams are actually happening in real life. This does sound like something that has been done numerous times before however with James Wan at the helm (Creator of The Conjuring) this one makes our list as one to watch.

2. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021)

It’s hard to create a list of releases these days without a Marvel film being released. With the next Phase in the MCU upon us Shang-Chi should hopefully be slightly different to what we’re used to and is likely to be a box office hit. Keep an eye out for Bruce Banner in the end credit by the way 😉

1. The Card Counter (2020)

A drama from writer-director Paul Schrader, whose film, First Reformed, gained excellent responses, is back with another in The Card Counter.

The film revolves around a former prisoner who knows how to play cards and bumps into a youngster ex soldier with a dark past. It premiered some time ago to glowing reviews however it’s only available to the general public this month.

Top Five Movies to Watch August 2021 https://whichfilm.com/top-five-movies-to-watch-august-2021/ Sun, 01 Aug 2021 08:15:01 +0000 https://whichfilm.com/?p=7053 We’re in the hottest month of 2021 before things start to cool down again, to add to the heat we have listed the top five movies of August 2021 that can be watched in the cinema or streamed.

We have three horrors for you, an action comedy plus a highly anticipated addition to the DC Universe!

5) Candyman

Candyman returns in this reboot of the 1980’s version. The 2021 version stars Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as an aspiring artist who moves into a new development built on top of the old Cabrini Green housing estate. Having learned a little about Candyman he draws inspiration from the legend which he unwittingly brings into life through his artwork.

4) The Night House

Although The Night House actually premiered in 2020 it’s still only being released to the general public in August. Starring Rebecca Hall who having recently lost her husband, starts to have horrific visions about his past actions.

3) Don’t Breathe 2

We’ve all been hoping to see the blind ex-specialist Norman Nordstrom again for some time. There’s something about getting on side with a bad guy who isn’t as bad as others. Rodo Sayagues directs this time, taking over from Sam Raimi.

2) Free Guy

Free Guy looks set to be spectacular with Ryan Reynolds playing the metaverse hero with support from the excellent Jodie Comer in what will be a non playable character role in a video game that has to save the game world from being deleted.

1) The Suicide Squad

Possibly the biggest blockbuster of the summer, The Suicide Squad sees a number of characters return from the first outing alongside others including John Cena as Peacemaker and an awesome rat type creature. Margot Robbie returns as Harley Quinn which is a huge plus. Don’t forget to watch the end credits on this one!

Top Ten Must See Comedy Films https://whichfilm.com/top-ten-must-see-comedy-films/ Mon, 08 Apr 2019 18:59:55 +0000 http://whichfilm.com/?p=3453 The following list has the ten funniest films you will ever see. The list is from classics from the 1980s to more modern ones. Here is the list. Enjoy.

1. Airplane!

This is a really good classic movie and it is also my favourite movie . It is about an ex fighter pilot who has to take over and also has to land the plane safely when the crew have food poison. This film is a must watch. The actors and actresses are good and it has the prettiest woman you will ever see (Julie Hagerty). It is a good comedy film and it is a must see for anyone.

2. 9 to 5

This is another classic that is both funny and enjoyable to watch. Three female office secretaries, try to get revenge on their cruel and unfair boss by kidnapping him and try to take over their business. The three main actresses are fantastic playing the trio especially Dolly Parton. Grace and Frankie fans will enjoy this film. It is one of the best films I have ever seen.

3. Tootsie

The award winning comedy starring Dustin Hoffman. An unemployed New York actor disguises himself as a woman after getting a part in a soap opera but it soon lands him into a lot of trouble. With an all-star cast and filled with really funny jokes, Tootise is a fantastic film for anyone.

4. Bridesmaids

One of the funniest movies I have ever seen. A single woman is asked to be her best friend’s maid of honour, however there is soon a rivalry between the maid of honour and one of the Bridesmaids during the process. If you haven’t seen it, then you are missing out on all of the fun stuff. Bridesmaids is a fun film for anyone and I love watching this film.

5. The Simpsons Movie

I love The Simpsons and if you are a Simpsons fan then this will be the film for you. Homer needs to save everyone in Springfield and the whole world from a catastrophe he has created. This film is funny and it is also enjoyable.

6. What about Bob?

Bill Murray is really good playing the role of a special friend in this film. It is about a psychiatrist (Richard Dreyfuss) who soon gets mad when one of his patients (Bill Murray) finds him while on vacation with his family. It is an amusing film to watch and I myself watched it a few times and I really enjoyed it.

7. Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion

This movie is so good. Two friends (Mira Sorvino and Lisa Kudrow) tell their peers how popular they have become after 10 of their high school graduation although it isn’t true and it soon gets out of control. I really love watching this film and it is very funny.

8. Ace Ventura Pet Detective

If you are a fan of Jim Carrey or you love him in other films (like me), then this will be the film that you will enjoy. When a dolphin mascot of an American football team is kidnapped, it is up to a secret detective (Jim Carrey) to solve the case and find the dolphin (as well as some of the players of the Miami NFL team). Courteney is all right in this film (but she is not as good as she was on Friends). Despite it may be old fashioned, it is still an enjoyable comedy film.

9. Instant Family

Although it is quite emotional at times, Instant Family is a funny true life story. It is a couple who adopt three children but they soon get over their heads and it is a bit harder look after them than what they have thought. This is one of my favourite films and it is good fun for anyone (not just adults but for kids as well).

10. Ladybird

This film has some drama in it but it is another funny movie and it has won some awards. A nurse (Laurie Metcalf) works energetically to keep her family afloat when her husband becomes unemployed. Her teenage daughter is the same as her, she is caring, strong willed and is really opinionated. It has a good supporting cast. I was impressed with Laurie Metcalf. It is a movie that teens and mothers will enjoy. I really love this film and it is a well-deserved winner.

Which TV shows should be made as a film? https://whichfilm.com/which-tv-shows-should-be-made-as-a-film/ Sun, 17 Feb 2019 10:46:11 +0000 http://whichfilm.com/?p=3270 TV shows such as Mrs Brown’s Boys, The Simpsons, Wallace and Gromit, Shaun the Sheep, Horrid Henry, The Inbetweeners, Mr Bean, Scooby- Doo, SpongeBob Squarepants and Pokémon have at least been turned into movie versions and shows such as Miraculous Ladybug will be turned in a movie in the future. But here is a list of films that haven’t turned into a film (or haven’t planned it yet) but it is 2019, it might change over time. There is something on the list for everyone. Here is the list:

Friends

It is hard to believe that the world’s favourite sitcom hasn’t been turned into a film. However I think there should be a film of them being reunited and also seeing what they have been up to. Hopefully it will be made into a film and if it does hopefully it will be as good as the successful TV show.

The Amazing World of Gumball

Who said that you are too old for cartoons? This is a really funny cartoon and I heard that it won several awards. It is about a young cat who always lands himself into trouble. He has a friend who is a fish who has legs, his younger sister who is bright, his mother is the worker in the family and a father who watches TV and sleeps. I think if it has been turned into a film it will be a good film for the whole family and it also has good actors/actresses in it as well such as Teresa Gallagher.

Keeping up Appearances

This is another funny sitcom back in the 1990’s but unfortunately that hasn’t been turned into a movie. However there are few cast members who are dead such as Richard’s actor who has recently passed away. This might be the reason that it was not made as a movie however the show is good.

Sam and Cat

I love this show but there are no more episodes and it got cancelled but I think if it was still running I think there might be a chance that it will be turned into a movie. Sam was played by Jennette Curdy (seen on I Carly and Cat was played by Ariana Grande.) However I still enjoy watching this show.

Sacredly squirrel

I don’t know why this show has so many negative reviews. It is now cancelled but I found this show funny. However, I don’t think many people will love it. Probably the reason why no more episodes are on and definitely no sign of it being made into a film but I think I would have enjoyed it.

Superstore

This is another funny sitcom. Normally in store workers are functional but in this one all of the workers are dysfunctional. I think if it was turned into a movie I think it would be a comedy. This show has mainly positive reviews so I think it is likely that it will have a movie version but let’s see what happens but I love watching this show.

We Bare Bears

It is another cartoon mainly for kids but I think there might be a chance that it would be easily made as a film. It has positive reviews so far, (that’s a good start) . I think this should be made as a film as it is funny and it is about 3 bears who attempt to find their place in developed society such as making human friends. This is another show that I enjoy watching.

Friday Night Dinner

This is another award winning sitcom. It is about 2 brothers who belong to a Jewish family who return home each week to have free meals. They either play pranks on each other. However, their father collects science magazines and their mother is obsessed with a cooking show. Their neighbour always appears during their meal. I think it had a film version it will be up there with the Inbetweeners. This is another show that I love watching.

Arthur

The stories in this show are actually quite good. There are mainly 2 different stories in this show (it is a little different than other TV shows when there is just 1 story.) If it has a movie version of the show, then it could be 1 whole story. It will also be turned from one of the books it has made but I don’t think it will happen but it is a good show (mainly for younger views but adults might enjoy it as well.)

These movies are from classics to more recent ones. Some are comedies, some are scary, some are musical and some are animation.

Do you ever wonder what is inside your head? This movie is about 5 emotions Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear and Disgust who control 11-year-old Riley’s head who is mainly happy but thing don’t go too well as she moves to San Francisco. However, when Sadness and Joy are accidently transported into long term memory the only emotions left are Anger, Fear and Disgust. Filled with imagination and comedy, this is a must-see.

2. Paddington
It is adapted from Michael Bond’s beloved book. A polite Peruvian bear searches for a home in London after an earthquake destroys his home. He soon meets the Browns who offer him a place to stay. However, there is a taxidermist Millicent Clyde who plans to stuff him. Paddington is also a must-see and it is an enjoyable film that the whole family will enjoy.

3. Frozen
The award winning animation from the Disney team. A fearless princess joins forces with a mountaineer to find her sister and break the icy spell she has created. An amazing animation and filled with fantastic songs this movie is enjoyable and brilliant and it is a good film for the whole family.

4. The Greatest Showman
This is a popular musical. This movie is inspired by the life of P.T. Barnum and celebrating the birth of show business. Packed with toe tapping music this film is a good film for the whole family and it will make you watch it again and again as it is so brilliant.

5. Mary Poppins
This is a classical musical from 1964. 2 children are faced with the prospect of a new nanny and they are surprised of the arrival of Mary Poppins (Julie Andrews) and they soon start on a series of adventures with Mary and her boyfriend Bert (Dick Van Dyke). This movie has good memorable music and it will please both kids and adults. It will also be Supercalifragileilisticexpildocious.

6. My Little Pony Equestria Girls Rainbow Rocks
It is a kid’s show and it is the best movie of the series. The Rainbooms battle their rivals in a school competition. Including the favourite villains you’ll ever see (The Dazzlings) this film is funny.

7. Despicable Me
This is movie is funny and it is a good family film. A super villain has to decide on whether to steal the moon (for which he has planned) or look after 3 orphaned girls. Including the funniest yellow creatures you will ever see (The Minions) this film is enjoyable for both kids and adults.

8. The Secret Life of Pets
This movie shows what pets do when their owners are not in the house. A terrier dog enjoys a comfortable life in New York until his owner adopts a giant and unruly canine. However during their walk they both get caught by animal control. So a white Pomeranian decides she is going to the terrier dog. Filled with hilarious moments this movie is a good family film.

9. Diary of a Wimpy Kid
This is the movie adaptation of the Jeff Kinney’s books. Middle school is not a fun experience for a preteen. He soon discovers the ups and downs of middle school such e.g. having difficulties of finding a seat during lunch. So he states his aims of becoming the popular kid in school. This is a funny film and it is a great family film.

10. Coraline
This movie is both scary and exciting. An 11 year old girl is exploring in her new house and discovers a secret door and realises that it is a better world e.g. her parent have time to play with her. But all is not as it seems when her parallel family want to keep her forever. Despite it is scary at times it is an enjoyable family film.

(Yours may not be the same order and/or the same as mine). Here is a list of those that I like in films/ TV movies/ TV shows.

1. Mary Steenburgen

The reason she is my favourite is because she is a strong actress. She is also very good on the characters that she plays. She is in a lot of films including Goin South, A midsummer night’s sex comedy, Back to the future 3, Step brothers, Did you hear about the Morgans?, Last Vegas, A walk in the woods and many more. You really need to watch one of her films as she is fantastic.

2. Lisa Kudrow

Despite she can be a bit annoying on Friends, I find Lisa Kudrow funny. She mainly plays characters who are dumb and is mainly distracted. She is in films such as Romy and Michele’s high school reunion, Dr. Doolittle 2, P.S. I love you, Hotel for dogs, Easy A, Neighbours and Neighbours 2: Sorority rising. You also need to watch one of her films as she is funny in those movies.

3. British actor/ actresses

I really got used to British actors/ actresses as I watch TV shows either it is a kid show or an adult show and I also love watching movie with British actor/ actresses in movies such as Cinderella (2015), Paddington 1 and 2 and Shaun the Sheep the movie although I don’t like some of them. The ones I am more interested in are Emma Watson, Morwenna Banks, Marc Silk, Emily Blunt, Derek Jacobi, Lizzie Waterworth, Simon Bird, Kate Winslet, Lily James, Julie Walters, Hugh Grant, Simon Bird, Alexander Armstrong and Catherine Tate.

4. Kristen Wiig

She is in movies such as Ice age 3 Dawn with the dinosaurs, How to Train your Dragon, Whip it, Despicable Me (different character), Friends with Kids, The secret life of Walter Mitty, How to train your dragon 2, the Martian and Ghostbuster (2016).

5. Cameron Diaz

She is also good on movies such as The Mask, There’s something about Mary, Charlie’s Angels, The Sweetest thing, In Her Shoes, The Other Woman and Annie (2014).

6. Jim Carrey

Jim Carrey is funny. The films he is in are Ace Ventura Pet Detective, The Mask, The Truman Show, Bruce Almighty and Mr Popper’s Penguins. He is a good actor and I suggest you see one of the movies he is in.

7. Dee Bradley Baker

He mainly plays vocalisations on animal voices. I think he is very good on some of the characters he plays especially when it is an animal voice. He is not in many movies but he is in movies such as The SpongeBob Squarepants movie and the sequel to the SpongeBob movie and he plays the voices of Fish, Wheels and Bucket in the Boxtrolls movie.

8. Lori Alan

She is very funny playing Pearl Krabs on SpongeBob Sqaurepants and I find her interesting. She mainly does vocal work. She is in movies such as The Spongebob SquarePants movie, Wall-e, Cloudy with the chance of meatballs, Toy Story 3, Monsters University, Despicable me 2 and 3, The SpongeBob sqaurepants movie sponge out of the water, Minions and Inside Out.

9. Rose Byrne

She is a good actress. I think the best film she is in is Bridesmaids. She is good in other movies such as I give it a year, Neighbours 1 and 2, Annie (2014) and Peter Rabbit. Although I don’t watch any, she is in Australian films as well as British and American. She is an Australian actress but she is in American movies and British movies as well as Australian movies. She was noted as a comedic actress when she was in Get Him To The Greek and Bridesmaids and then became successful from the movies X-Men First class, Neighbours, Spy and X-men: Apocalypse.

10. Julie Hagerty

Although not that many people enjoy her, I think she is really funny. Elaine Dickinson (played by her) is one of my favourite characters on Airplane!. However I think her best performance is playing Dulcy Ford on A Midsummer Night’s sex comedy. Her film roles also include What about Bob and A Guy Thing. She is one of the prettiest actresses. In my opinion you should see her on Airplane 1 and 2 , A Midsummer’s night sex comedy, What about Bob and maybe watch her in other good movies she is in. Overall I think she is a good actress.

Top 10 Chick-flicks for a Girls Night In https://whichfilm.com/top-10-chick-flicks-for-a-girls-night-in/ Tue, 30 Oct 2018 10:05:33 +0000 http://whichfilm.com/?p=2952 Chick-Flicks. The one genre of movie a teen girl sleepover is never complete without (or boy sleepover, after all, it is 2018). These movies make you laugh and are the most relatable things ever. So, if you’re wondering what to watch next, look no further. Here are the top 10 Chick-Flicks from the past few years:

1. Mean Girls
Okay, so we’ve all heard of this movie. The classic tale of an innocent new girl being consumed by the pressures of popularity. This film is packed with great actors and hilarious jokes. With relatable moments and awkwardly cringey mess ups, this movie is a must watch!

2. 10 Things I Hate About You
This movie is beautiful. The acting is fantastic, and the storyline is interesting. When Bianca can’t date until her sister does, she hires one of the coolest guys in school to hit on her. But when her sister starts to fall for him, can she deal with the truth?

3. Love Actually
How much do I really need to say about this movie? If you haven’t seen it, you are seriously missing out! With an incredible cast, including the cutest little boy you will ever see (Thomas Brodie-Sangster) this film is an essential for any sleepover.

4. Clueless
You know movies always seem to have that stupid character that always makes everyone laugh? Well what if that character was the star of the show? Clueless is a hilarious movie that’ll have you and your friends laughing for weeks! A completely oblivious girl must learn that the world doesn’t revolve around her.

5. Bridesmaids
Bridesmaids is a very funny film thatll have you laughing for months. From the classic fart jokes to maid of honour speech battles, I guarantee you will be left in fits! The female version of ‘Hangover’ is a must!

6. 50 First Dates

This hilarious, but heart-warming movie is great if you want to watch a film with more of a storyline. Following the story of the girl who loses her memory every day, Adam Sandler’s character is forced to earn her love again and again.

7. Love, Rosie
Now this movie is insane and beautiful all at once. When Rosie falls pregnant at 16, her life it completely flipped upside down. As she fights whether to stay with the father, or with the man she truly loves. With scenes that have you on the edge of your seat, you cannot watch this movie and not fall in love with it.

8. DUFF
The DUFF is a fantastic and relatable movie that everyone will love. When Bianca realises she is the DUFF of her friendship group (Designated Ugly Fat Friend), she is forced to enlist the help of the school’s coolest football player with the hope of turning the tables.

9. White Chicks
When two FBI agent’s jobs hang in the balance of one case and they fail immediately, they plan to fake it till they make it. With wigs and make up, they pretend to be the white chicks they are meant to be protecting. This movie is one of the funniest films I have ever seen!

10. Legally Blonde
Legally blond tells the stereotyping story of the ‘dumb blonde’ who tries to change. When Elle’s boyfriend won’t propose because she’s ‘too blonde’, she decides to go to Harvard in an attempt to win his heart. This movie is desperately funny and teaches you that just because you have a fancy degree, you can’t solve everything.

Which Film is the best Marvel film in 2018? https://whichfilm.com/which-film-is-the-best-marvel-film-in-2018/ Fri, 17 Aug 2018 12:03:23 +0000 http://whichfilm.com/?p=2547 As you may know, many films have been extremely popular in cinemas this year, but which of these films that have been released is the most entertaining to watch?

Marvel is all about action and adventure stretching to a bit of romance and a lot of humour. So if you love any of these key themes, of you want to just watch your favourite actor of screen for an hour and a half, I would recommend watching these films that have been release in 2018.

At the beginning of this year, you may recall that Marvel’s “Black Panther” was released and positive reviews of it have been all over the internet! It’s a story about the new King of Wakanda who has to get back the technology stolen by Claw from a museum whilst Killmonger (another villain) tries to battle for the throne in order to gain power over Wakanda. This film had something for everyone; action, drama, suspense and most importantly humour.

Surely everyone chuckled when Shuri asked T’Challa “What are those!?”, referencing the iconic vine. Of course the graphics were amazing like every film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe but the stunts done by the actors and stunt doubles were more than impressive. You may remember the car chase scene which I felt was one of the best in this film. “Black Panther” was a hilarious family film that left the audience wanting to own Wakanda technology and left everyone want to have the power of the Black Panther.

Although this film was action packed and thrilling, it didn’t link to the Marvel timeline very much. However, I would say that it was one of Marvel’s most hilarious works of 2018. This is because the characters were rather new and the audience got a chance to understand their qualities. Also, the use of a young Princess and her modern references to vines and technology made this film appealing for teens in the audience.

Marvel is known for its humorous films throughout the years and with “Infinity War” the directors were able to create a wide range of emotions for the audience. “Infinity War” came out in April and had a lot of storylines leading up to it. It is also going to have a sequel to it (which is unnamed in order to keep secrets) in April 2019. This film made those who watched it laugh, cry and want to murder several characters. The Marvel franchise promoted this film as being a near end to the beloved Avengers as they faced Thanos who aimed to gain power by collecting the soul stones. A lot had been planned about this film and many actors were given fake scripts and scenes to shoot in order to keep things secret. *cough* Tom Holland and Mark Ruffalo.

To us all, the ending was a surprise. It played with our emotions and made many of us cry rather than laugh. Many parts of “Infinity War” did indeed make the audience giggle such as when Drax wanted to know “Why is Gamora?” and the use of banter between Ironman and Dr. Strange. Most Marvel fans have seen this film by now and understand its significant role In the MCU.

In “Infinity War” there were less jokes as the film was based of the ‘will they, wont they’ theme of beating Thanos. The audience was also focused on hoping that their favourite characters weren’t killed off to which many of us were disappointed. Due to this idea, this film wasn’t the most rib-tickling of films of 2018 as it had a very un-comical ending.

As this film has had films leading up to it for 10 years, it may be confusing to those who haven’t seen key Marvel movies as there are plot holes and key characters in every scene. If you love Marvel and you want to know if the Avengers can defeat Thanos or you just want to laugh at the comments and banter then I would recommend “Infinity War”.

My top funniest film in the MCU of 2018 has got to be “Antman and the Wasp”. This is because the actors portrayed witty and comical characters that made the audience fall in love with them. First of all, the character of Scott Lang has been presented as a typical comical fatherly figure –despite the fact that he is a criminal. This film is a sequel to “Antman” which came out in 2014 and left the audience in fits of laughter after introducing the character.

The film starts off 2 years after “Civil War” which came out in 2016, where Antman featured near the middle of the film. It shows the audience how Scott can still be a father and a superhero despite problems he faces alone. Those who have seen the film understand the character of Luis and his witty and hilarious attitude towards the situations. His character may be one of the funniest and most lovable in the MCU (after Loki in Thor Ragnarok, of course.)

The typical Antman costume is featured in this sequel and Marvel introduces Hope’s character as being The Wasp which is how the first film left off with. Many parts of this film are portrayed as being more comical than serious which helps the audience to understand where the film lies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe timeline. I don’t need truth serum to say that this film made me laugh as much as the first one did!

I would highly recommend “Antman and the Wasp” due to its effective approach to the characters and their personality. The subtle and short jokes and witty comments really make this film something worth seeing. Of course like every Marvel film the film ends on cliff-hanger, creating even more suspense to lead up to the untitled Avengers film in 2019. I would recommend this for anyone who loves action, adventure, a bit of romance and to just laugh.

Which Film Will be Worth Waiting For? https://whichfilm.com/which-film-will-be-worth-waiting-for/ Fri, 17 Aug 2018 08:43:21 +0000 http://whichfilm.com/?p=2535 With the rapid rate films seem to be pouring into our cinemas, there is no doubt that there are always films that we can’t wait to watch. However, there is a film that has caught my eye that I certainly think will be worth waiting for: “Crazy Rich Asians.”

The title does perhaps appear a little crude but it is based on the bestselling 2013 book by Kevin Kwan. The film premiered on the 7th August at the TCL Chinese Theatre in LA, and was released in the US on the 15th August. So far, it has received a 94% score on Rotten Tomatoes – which is no mean feat – with The Guardian calling it “a vital crowd-pleaser” and “a watershed moment for representation in Hollywood.” Although deftly keeping to the classic rom-com formula, it has been praised for its comedy, emotion and stunning setting.

The film is centred on an American with Chinese heritage called Rachel Chu who has been in a long term relationship with her boyfriend Nick. She happily joins him on a trip to Singapore for his best friend’s wedding when Rachel discovers Nick is part of one of the wealthiest families in Singapore… and one of its most eligible bachelors. Rachel now has to deal with the pressures and battles that come with the elevated society she has been thrust into and Nick’s disapproving mother.

This film is quite a landmark in its genre since only last year, only four out of the top 100 grossing films featured an Asian protagonist. For that reason, this film should be worth watching for its cinematic significance alongside the reassurance that it is an entertaining film, not just created for the sake of creating an Asian centric film to please criticisms. Perhaps, from the impression of some reviews, it isn’t ground-breaking in the field of the romcom, but it certainly is in many other aspects.

I must admit that romcoms are not usually my first choice when it comes to picking a film to watch and in this case – wait for. Despite its release in the US being the 15th August, here in the UK we will have to wait until the 2nd November. However, from the successful release, high audience satisfaction and general positivity from reviews, “Crazy Rich Asians” will be the film that is worth waiting for.

Which Film Will Be The Major Box Office Hit This Year? https://whichfilm.com/which-film-will-be-the-major-box-office-hit-this-year/ Fri, 17 Aug 2018 08:37:42 +0000 http://whichfilm.com/?p=2532 This year, a huge variety of films have been released from action films to comedies. Having had little to do this summer break, I have spent lots of time watching newly released films at the cinema- but which film is the one to watch in 2018?

At the moment, one of the most popular films shown in cinemas is ‘Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again’. Anyone who is a huge fan of the original ‘Mamma Mia’ has probably seen its sequel already. Many critics have said it is better than the first film, however, I disagree. This is because I feel the film has many plot holes in it such as the insignificance of Cher’s character. Additionally, I found the switching between the past and present confusing in some aspects. On the other hand, the film was extremely entertaining with the killer cast or the original as well as the iconic ABBA songs played throughout. Overall, this was a great family film to watch as it featured aspects or comedy and romance which can be enjoyed by everyone.

Another film shown this year is ‘Incredibles 2’. I found this film an exciting and action-packed sequel which is equally as hilarious to the original. The iconic characters connected the audience which their humour and witty remarks, and the storyline was defined and easy to follow. This film also contained references to ‘The Incredibles’ and was set directly after, allowing the audience to be able to remember the ending and therefore be able to understand and enjoy it more. However, I found that I was easily able to guess who the villain of the film was before it was revealed. This film is great for families, especially those who saw the first one together as it has action, comedy and many other sub-genres so there’s something for everyone.

‘Ant Man and The Wasp’, a superhero film produced by Marvel, is a hilarious action-packed film which has recently been released This film has something for everyone- it contains aspects of comedy, romance and action and is exciting to watch. However, this film may be confusing to watch for those who haven’t previously watched other Marvel films as it has references to films such as ‘Ant Man’, ‘Captain America: Civil War’ and ‘Avengers: Infinity War’. This film is mostly aimed at Superhero fans, although its funny dialogue, characters and plotline are enjoyable for everyone and could easily turn someone into a superhero fan!

In addition to this, Marvel has also produced ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ earlier this year. The majority of hard-core Marvel fans have seen this hit film which has a trailer with 85milllion views, showing the enormous hype of the film. Half of the viewers of this film would say the massive crossover of characters, storyline and funny dialogue made the film one of the best of the year. However, many people believe the shocking ending of the film is upsetting and should not have been done. On the other hand, I enjoyed the film and its plotline, although it was shocking. Although this film was first shown in cinemas in April, some cinemas are still showing it now due to its large amounts of views meaning this could still be a long-time running film although its DVD is soon to be released. Overall, I feel this film is one of the best this year, although it’s not for everyone as you would have had to watch practically every other Marvel film in order to understand it.

Marvel also released ‘Black Panther’ earlier this year. This film featured a plotline about ‘Wakanda’, a fantasy country with futuristic high-tech cities and machinery as it is being robbed by outsiders. This film is action packed and exciting to watch as it is full of colour. However, I felt this film lacked comedy, although it did not have a complicated story line so was easy to follow. Therefore, this film was enjoyable, although not the most exciting action film this year.

For these reasons and others, I would say that the huge hit film ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ will be the major box office hit this year as it is still being shown in cinemas, as well as its DVD being released later this month and its huge number of views of the film itself and the trailers. However, this film isn’t for everyone as it is aimed at fans of the franchise. Other films such as ‘Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again’ and ‘Incredibles 2’ are also sequels, meaning you would have to previously watch the original film first. Therefore, I would recommend ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ to those who enjoy action and comedy films as the film to watch.

Which Film is Best to Watch on a Rainy Sunday? https://whichfilm.com/which-film-is-best-to-watch-on-a-rainy-sunday/ Tue, 14 Aug 2018 09:38:27 +0000 http://whichfilm.com/?p=2504 I’ll apologise for the title of this article in advance as a lot depends on what type of film genre you are into so the chances you will agree with me are slim to say the least.

Still, there is the chance that you might not have seen the few films I’m going to mention, let alone on a rainy Sunday afternoon. First of all, let’s assume the children are away at Butlins (should you have children); that gives us the option to add a racy option or two.

The first I would choose goes right back to my childhood and has all the adventure you need whilst having a nice cup of tea and a bit of crumpet to stop the belly rumbling. Warlords of Atlantis first came out in 1978 but appeared mostly on television throughout the 80’s. It has a bit of sea faring, a giant octopus, dinosaur type monsters and some nice deep water scenes. It’s only 96 minutes long but it seems to go on longer and with plenty of splashes of water when the giant octopus attacks meaning the rain outside will add to the enjoyment!

There’s something about knowing that the day after Sunday is Monday again that depresses the very best of us so why not depress ourselves further with a film about the World ending. There’s obviously a number of choices but if you’re looking for something with a bit of a twist and a film to have you thinking a little deeper than normal on a rainy Sunday then Cell with John Cusack and Samuel L Jackson would be a good choice, it’s a bit of a weird one granted and the ending won’t have you have laughing but it includes plenty of action, zombie types and mystery that might delay you putting on the Sunday lunch.

Other disaster movies could include Dante’s Peake, Armageddon, or, if you really want to go as low as you possibly can, and just want something to watch the Sharknado will waste a good hour and a half. Be prepared to be really disappointed with the latter though!

When it comes to Sunday’s then two always stick out in my mind, particularly on a bank holiday weekend, but any Carry On film or James Bond film are perfect for any rainy day in. My recommendations would be either From Russian With Love or The Spy Who Loved Me where James Bond is concerned, or for the Carry On franchise, Carry on Doctor or Carry On Don’t Lose Your Head, also known as Carry On Chopping, all four will entertain you and if the weather where you are is anything like it is generally in the UK then you could quite easily fit all four in!

Five Films To Look Forward To In May 2018 https://whichfilm.com/five-films-to-look-forward-to-in-may-2018/ Tue, 01 May 2018 07:45:50 +0000 https://whichfilm.com/?p=7837 April was packed with some superb films and judging by what’s to look forward to in May we’re going to be treated to similar. This month we have a super hero, one of the worlds greatest writers and even something from Star Wars!

Here’s our favourite five films of May 2018 to look forward to!

5) Mary Shelley

Biography’s don’t have too much limelight these days but that’s not to say they’re not worth watching, especially not one with arguably the best ever creator of a horror character. Mary Shelley’s biopic, directed by Haifaa al-Mansour, explores her creation of Frankenstein and her struggle to get the novel published.

4) Deadpool 2

The foul mouthed super hero returns in what has been anticipated to be a commercial cash grab but let’s take that with a pinch of salt as Ryan Reynolds battles Josh Brolin in what should be a highly entertaining encounter.

3) Overboard

It might be a remake but they can be fun, especially if they have been written with the current aspects of life included. There were no mobile phones when the original was made back in 1987. This version of Overboard, starring Eugenio Derbez and Anna Faris should be a giggle.

2) Life Of The Party

Another Melissa McCarthy comedy that fans are hoping will be just as good as her last success in “Spy”. It may not hit those heights but it’s certainly one to look forward to.

1) Solo: A Star Wars Story

Everybody loves Han Solo no matter the age of the viewer and to see what Disney have knocked together to see what he was up to as a younger version of the smuggler is exciting. We also have the chance to see how he and Chewbacca met for the first time and that is worth the cinema ticket alone!

Five Films To Look Forward To April 2018 https://whichfilm.com/five-films-to-look-forward-to-april-2018/ Sat, 03 Mar 2018 15:21:18 +0000 https://whichfilm.com/?p=7834 You know what April means? Sunshine will soon be on its way! Well, at least for those of us in the UK and US. The Southern Hemisphere… sorry, you’ve just had your summer.

With the oncoming sunshine comes with it a number of films to look forward to and we have come up with our favourite five that the three of us here are looking forward to.

5) A Quiet Place

This horror, directed by, and starring John Krasinski is one to really look forward to. It takes horror, adds some salt, pepper and lots of silence, and that is what this one is about. A family having to remain super silent for fear of being gobbled up by some type of monster is certainly one to watch this April.

4) Wilding

A dark drama with a twist of horror, Wilding is based on a growing teenager that discovers a dark secret going all the way back to her childhood.

3) Avengers: Infinity War

We’ve not seen them since most got together to fight one another in Captain American: Civil War. In Infinity War we should see them have to group together to fight the mighty Thanos who is keen to get his hands on some Infinity Stones. Be braced for full on action and perhaps not the ending you might expect!

2) Rampage

If it has Dwayne Johnson in then you can bet your last pound or dollar that there will be action and lots of it. In Rampage, ‘The Rock’ has to rescue his pet gorilla from destroying the city after it is infected with a dangerous pathogen.

1) Traffik

The only thriller in April 2018 we feel worth mentioning is that of Traffik. A couple on what is supposed to be a romantic mini break turns to hell when a biker gang crosses path with them as they do what they can to protect their business interests and secrets!
